Do The Foundations in Your Home Need Repairing?

February 5, 2016 Guest Post

If you’re not sure what it is that you’re looking for, knowing when your home foundations are in need of repairs can be quite tricky. Foundations are designed to be strong and stable, and if you’re lucky, you may never need to get your home foundations worked on or repaired. However, some are weaker than others, or other elements could contribute to the deterioration of your foundations. Making sure that you know the small tell-tale signs to help you get any foundation problems seen to as soon as possible is vital, so we’ve listed a few of the big ones for you here.

Bowing Walls
If any of the walls in your home are looking rather convex or concave rather than even, then you can take this as a sure sign that your foundations are in dire need of repairs. When a foundation is damaged or broken, extra stress and pressure is put upon the walls in your home, which over time leads to the ‘bowing’ effect. if your walls are in this situation, call a professional such as a foundation contractor in Plano as soon as possible.

Sloping Floors
Are your floors on a bit of a slope, and not as straight and even as they used to be? If you’ve noticed that your floors are steadily sloping downwards a bit more than normal, this is a big sign that your foundation is having issues. If you think your floors may be sloping a little but aren’t sure, use a ball to place in a room to see whether it rolls to the other side without needing to be pushed. If it does, your floors are sloping and it’s worth getting your foundation checked.

Cracks in Walls
Because of all the extra stress which faulty or damaged foundations put on your walls, it’s not at all uncommon for cracks to appear in either the bricks or the molding, which you can find on your walls, ceilings or around windows and doors. If unexplained cracks begin to appear in your walls, it could well be a foundation issue. Cracks can also cause other issues, such as letting moisture in and causing mold – so if you do find them, getting them seen to straight away is important.

Floor Cracks
It isn’t just the walls in your home which damaged or broken foundations put a lot of stress on, your floors can suffer for it as well. The most common flooring area where you are likely to find cracks if you have foundation problems is in concrete basement floors, so it’s a good idea to check them regularly to ensure that no cracks have appeared. You might also find cracks in other types of flooring such as wooden floors or tiled flooring. If you do, it’s important to call a professional straight away to mend your floors and your foundation.

Foundation problems may not be something we think about checking for often, but if they’re left unattended they can cause a lot of damage.
