Dabob Bay Residence was designed by Bjarko | Serra Architects, located in Olympic Peninsula, WA. According to the Architects : ” Water, forest, and mountains converge at this family retreat above Dabob Bay, near Washington’s Hood Canal. The building is situated at the end of a ridge, surrounded by ravines on three sides. It is this positioning that affords the expansive mountain and water views to the south and the west. In response to the client’s affinity for the building type of traditional cabins, the house evolved as a modern interpretation while still recalling gable roof forms along with wood and stone finishes. The post and beam structure is expressed, allowing for the glazed infill to give transparency in all directions. The three main elements of the house—the entry, the great room, and a sleeping tower—follow the site’s meandering ridge with shifting walls that conform to the topography and the tree line. The tower offers the most dramatic experience as it reaches high above the descending ravines. Much like a forest service lookout, it provides for a 360-degree view of the surrounding environment. ”

The linear plan was intended to be a simple translation of a previous pattern of habitation along the edge of a majestic tree line separating a deep natural watercourse and an open alluvial valley floor. The building opens freely to the north. It also allows the inhabitants to move to spaces deeper within the protection of the tree canopy as the season dictates. An elemental structure embedded in the valley floor suggesting both openness and protection.

Here are pictures of house in the Cannon Hills, one of country house was designed by Polhemus Savery DaSilva, designed with incorporates a combination of traditional forms and repetitive roof elements. Both the hilly terrain of the neighborhood and the specific natural characteristics of the site, give inspiration for the design and helped dictate the form and the layout of the house. Windows and French doors on the south facade open from the main living spaces onto a garden terrace and large yard area beyond. Open interior spaces and easy connections to this outdoor living space are well-suited to an active family.

From Architect : ” In pursuit of a spare, clean aesthetic, many traditional interior elements are simple and elegant. The living room fireplace mantel is an abstract, sculptural form that “floats” above the fireplace which is outlined by limestone. The dining room is the most dramatic space in the house. It has a high window bringing north light in from above and a pair of bowed “Romeo and Juliet” balconies effecting a transition between the room’s soaring cathedral ceiling and the lower ceiling of the living room beyond.

The balconies are a part of the second floor circulation above. At the southeast corner, an arrangement of tall windows welcomes morning and afternoon sun in the casual dining area. Custom kitchen cabinetry, made of clear maple in a simple Shaker style, reinforces the house’s spare aesthetic but is rich and warm in its color. ”

This house located in Southwestern Michigan was designed by Wheeler Kearns Architects. From architects : ” Interiors are intentionally casual – concrete floors, pickled wood ceilings, painted millwork – reflecting the main purpose of the retreat home. Children’s notions of play and adventure are satisfied with sleeping lofts, secret bedrooms and a “treehouse” atop a freestanding two-story outbuilding that anchors the corner of the formal lawn. The outbuilding also functions as pool storage, potting shed and lantern; glowing in the evening landscape. ”
