How to Decorate Your Home on a Budget
March 14, 2021 Home Decor
Popularity in home decor changes as quickly as what’s popular in clothing and fashion. One year it’s high fashion to have all minimal and white decor, while two years later, people start favoring eclectic design with enough plants to fill a Rainforest Cafe restaurant. If you want to keep up on trends, but your budget is fighting back against reckless spending, here are a couple of tips to keep your spending down and your decor fabulous.
Thrift Shop It
There’s nothing like an excellent thrift-shop-find to make you feel like a million bucks. Most people are more excited to point out great deals on things they got, rather than brag about how expensive a thing they purchased. Go to your local thrift stores, look around on Craigslist, and you can even browse eBay for the first time in ten years. Second hand is not only cheaper, but it’s also better for the environment, and even if it’s retro- that’s awesome! Retro things always come back in style.
Paint Makes Anything New
If you don’t want to buy new things, but you want to get rid of the millennial pink, Pantone’s color of the year in 2016, paint is the answer! You don’t have to get rid of your things or try to budget for something new and expensive. Sand the surface, spray paint it, and then seal it, and you have a brand new piece of furniture! This act could change your collection of mismatched colored furniture into a lot of beautiful turquoise pieces, or you could put a Louboutin edge on it by painting the inner-facing legs of all of your tables and chairs a bright red! Have fun with it, and do what makes you happy.
DIY It Already!
Speaking of taking the design into your own hands, you can make so many things on your own! You don’t have to buy a ton of power tools, either! Most cities have joint workshop areas where you can use the tools they have on hand as long as you bring your supplies like wood and paint. Look up schematics on whatever piece of furniture or decor you’re looking at, and get to work! If you’re new to building, ask a handier friend to help, or you can study up on sites like YouTube for great tips!
Don’t Do Ugly Design.
This tip may sound incredibly simple and a little patronizing, but it’s something all of us have to try to keep in mind. If you catch yourself wanting to change up your decor, consider why. If it’s because you just bought some real estate in Toronto and want to make it feel less empty, that’s a great reason to make over your home! If, instead, you see that a particular look or design is popular and you want to fit in (even though you secretly think it’s hideous), save your money!
You will see your home more often than anyone else; you need to make sure that the design choices you make will be ones you’ll be excited to come home to.
